Desiderata Revisited

While at work today in the midst of one of our random and diverse conversations, a kind and learned young man asked if we were familiar with the poem, “Desiderata” by Max Erhmann. I am uncertain why this young man mentioned the poem unless it was his attempt to elevate the discussion to a higher plane.

With the Internet’s assistance, another bright and inquisitive young man promptly found the poem, read it, and seemed genuinely touched by it. I asked the young man to send me the link and he did one better and sent the whole poem. I was struck by the sage advice and the construction of the poem and will spend more energy incorporating this wisdom in my own life.

This poem inspired me and helped illuminate a revelation about my current work situation. It drove home the point that neither the work nor the company is the most important factor in a job, but the people are. When an unlikely group of open-minded and spirited individuals are assembled, some of the layers of life’s mysteries are peeled back to give us a better view of humanity and ourselves.

Long live Max Ehrman and the essential desires of the human race.

Peace.
